Pancake Day, or rather Shrove Tuesday, actually takes place this year on February 12. Pancakes were traditionally eaten on the day before Lent as a means of using up all the "bad" foods before fasting.

However US restaurant chain iHOP, or the International House Of Pancakes, has broken a bit with tradition and since 2006 celebrated a National Pancake Day in February. The chain uses the occasion to distribute free pancakes while encouraging customers to make a donation to the charities it supports.

Through this method iHOP claims to have raised $10 million since 2006.

In a sign of how seriously fast-food pancake fans take their snacks, iHOP's "free pancake" deal has pushed the restaurant into sixth position in Tuesday's top ten worldwide trending topics on Twitter.

Elsewhere on the social network fans of the singer Demi Lovato based in Italy are hoping to bring the singer to their country by trending "#WeWantDemiLovatoInItaly" in third place.

Also on Twitter "Richard III," the medieval king whose skeleton was recently found beneath a car park in England, continues to course a buzz.
