What began as a call from a member of the public about "suspicious activity" on a vehicle belonging to budget transport company Megabus has got Twitter users trending the company's name.

The Staffordshire Police, which responded to the call, confirmed that no one was hurt and Twitter users have been making light of the incident; Marcus Leroux (@marcusleroux), retail correspondent at The Times, tweeted "It was all a misunderstanding, apparently. They thought they were on the road to Martyrdom. The Megabus driver had said Nottingham," while comedy Twitter account Steve Death (@Its_Death) tweets, "Terrorists on a Megabus foiled by its inability to travel above 50mph. C'mon. It's like you're not even trying any more."

Also causing a buzz on the microblogging site is South African-born Canadian professional basketball player Steve Nash, who signed for Los Angeles Lakers from rival Phoenix Suns on July 5.

The recently released blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man is continuing to trend after its July 3 release in several countries, as is the so-called "God particle" Higgs boson, the discovery of which was announced by scientists this week.

In first place on Thursday's trending topics is the Spanish phrase "Cosas Que Gritan En Un Entierro," which loosely means "things you scream at a funeral," followed by the Russian expression "обожаю," meaning "love it."
