Twitter index: Fourth of July, Higgs Boson

Twitter is abuzz with an announcement from CERN laboratory in Geneva that scientists have found the Higgs boson, or so called "God Particle." The existence of the particle, which is believed to be the elementary particle that gives mass to other particles, has long been a scientific theory. The discovery of the particle should prove that there is an invisible energy field that is spread through the vacuum of the whole universe.

The discovery by CERN, which has been called by some "one of the most important scientific discoveries of the last 100 years," accounts for two trending topics on Twitter -- "CERN" and "Higgs."

Twitter users are also celebrating American Independence Day, wishing each other a "Happy 4th of July," and One Direction fans are trending #leonalewis after the British singer (@leonalewismusic) tweeted her favorite member of the boy band was Liam Payne.
