The 62-year-old endurance swimmer was attempting to cross the 103 mile (167 km) stretch of open water between Cuba and Key West, Florida. Sadly after spending 60 hours in the water and being stung by a jellyfish, a major lightning storm proved to be the last straw and about halfway through her attempt Diana Nyad had to be pulled out of the water on Tuesday for her own safety.

It was Nyad's fourth attempt at completing the swim, which she was doing without a shark cage, relying on a team of divers and electronic repellents to keep predators away.

Nyad's efforts have sparked two trending topics on Twitter Tuesday -- fifth place "Cuba to Florida" and eighth place "Diana Nyad".

Also causing a buzz is British-Irish boyband One Direction, whose fans are trending words associated with the group under the hashtag "1DWords," and "Greek Directioners Support Zayn" in reference to member Zayn Malikn who recently made his relationship with Little Mix's Perrie known to his family.
