As inevitable as another iPhone is a new, improved version of one of the planet's best-selling smartphones, Samsung's Galaxy S III. The Android-based handset could even make an appearance in a matter of weeks, well ahead of the May anniversary of the S III's release.

Top of the rumour pile is a Full HD 1920x1080 pixel display, which given the S III's trend-setting screen, seems entirely plausible and perhaps even inevitable for top-line handsets in 2013. Also rumoured is a 13-megapixel camera, though in offering such a thing Samsung would undo the work of its first connected compact camera, the unimaginatively named Samsung Galaxy Camera.

Another unlikely -€“ though tempting -€“ possibility is that Samsung will use its undoubted expertise in AMOLED screens to produce what everyone knows is the technology's end-game; a flexible, totally drop-proof screen, which the Wall Street Journal reported on last month. However, that particular innovation will most likely bounce through to 2014.
