We’ve covered a few notable lingerie e-commerce sites across Asia, but so far none were in Indonesia. While OgahMahal (sort of means “no thank you expensive”) isn’t the first, it’s a good example of how simple it is to start your own online business in Indonesia at this time and age.
OgahMahal is a one-month-old specialist online store that sells only lingerie. The site has a range of categories, such as for sexy lingerie, big-size, cosplay, cute sleepwear, and bikinis. Co-founder Intan told us that because many people here (men and women alike) are still reluctant to purchase sexy lingerie at offline stores, there is lots of space for online lingerie shops like OgahMahal to grow.
So far, the startup is recording more than two sales every day. That’s really not bad, considering that each product sold there costs around IDR 100,000 (US$10), so it’s not a low-end store. That means OgahMahal’s first monthly revenue is around IDR 6,000,000 ($620) already - but that’s not much when weighed up against Jakarta’s regional minimum wage of IDR 2.2 million ($227).
Why not open your own online shop?There are a few interesting things to point out in OgahMahal. First, the site’s name doesn’t indicate that it sells lingerie at all. Second, OgahMahal’s site has a very simple interface compared to the other local lingerie e-stores. Third, it’s really tough to find the site via Google. And fourth, the online representatives - even when they’re online - aren’t replying to my messages. How does OgahMahal get its customers?
The answer is of course the good, old offline marketing efforts like word-of-mouth. Before OgahMahal, Intan had her own online perfume store too, so her previous customer base played a part too. She said that OgahMahal’s product collection helps too.
One thing we could take note from here is that as long you are offering decent products and services, there will always be customers for you. Some of them may buy from you out of sheer trust. With more online payment systems emerging recently in the country, and easier ways to build a decent website, those wondering if they should open their online shops need to ask the question ‘why not?’
