Sina Weibo index: Young Chinese now more casual about sex

According to a survey conducted by the National Population and Family Planning Commission, nearly 70 percent of Chinese are engaging in premarital sex, compared with just 16 percent during the late 1980s. Also, according to a sexual and reproductive health research report of university students carried out in Guangdong Province in 2010, only 34.3 percent of college students are using condoms when having sex.

One reason for this trend is that China’s economic development has led to a gradual easing of moral standards in society, Yang Xiong, youth director of the Institute of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told the daily. Another reason is that young Chinese people now have easy internet access to information relating to sex. At the same time, the overwhelming popularity of GPS-based mobile applications such as WeChat in China has made it very easy for the Chinese to meet up for casual sex, reported the website of Newsweek magazine, The Daily Beast, earlier this year.

The increasingly permissive attitude to sex by the Chinese has led to a record number of unwanted pregnancies in the country, with statistics showing more Chinese teen girls getting pregnant due to a lack of sex education, reported the Shanghai Daily last year. “We are usually busiest two to three months after the summer vacation and other festivals such as Valentine's Day,” Zhang Zhenrong, director of Shanghai’s sole hotline for pregnant girls, told the daily. "Sometimes we receive almost 1,000 phone calls a day from teenagers."
