Finding financial backers for your pet project used to be a chore. But thanks to Kickstarter, a crowd-funding platform, you can now raise funds from millions of people in exchange for various perks, such as a free copy of the album or game you want to produce.

The amounts donated by individuals range from a few dollars to tens of thousands. At the last count more than US$1 billion has been pledged since the site launched in 2009, with around 60,000 projects successfully reaching their funding goals. To date, 63 projects have even managed to smash the US$1 million barrier - we'll begin with the Ouya games console that was a resounding Kickstarter success and is on sale to the public...
