Google+ trends: Google’s augmented reality game launches, Dell’s profits drop
Google has just launched an augmented-reality real-world game and mobile application.
The game, which involves a large amount of being outdoors, requires users to collect units of energy, known as "XM" by walking certain routes, this "energy" is then spent on visiting "portals" -- which are real world locations such as museums or libraries. Any Android phone user can play from anywhere in the world and must compete for "resources" with other players in their area who can choose to play for one of two teams, "the enlightened" or "the resistance". See a teaser of the game on YouTube at: http://goo.gl/3jGHm. The app was launched in closed Beta on November 15 and is expected to be freely available on Google Play soon; to request an invitation see: http://www.ingress.com/.
Also in the tech world Friday Dell is causing a buzz after announcing that its third-quarter profit slid by 47 percent, a drop that has been blamed on lower PC sales, poor demand from large corporations and a shift to mobile computing.
The news that Dell Inc, once the world's largest computer manufacturer, had announced such a slide in profits, is causing a stir on Google+, causing the company's name to trend in fourth position.
