Google+ trends: changes to Hangouts, 1D's announcement

Following a series of announcements at Google I/O, which began Wednesday, on changes to Google's social network, Google+, users of the service are discussing these changes. One of the areas of Google+ that is undergoing changes is the popular video chat feature Hangouts, which today is trending in first position.

Essentially the changes combine the video chat feature of Hangouts and the text chat feature of G Chat, basically bringing together chat across different platforms into one unified feature with the aim of giving conversations a feeling of increased continuity.

That feeling of continuity is increased by the fact that the conversation doesn't end when those involved leave -- it merely pauses and saves the images, text or videos shared within the chat, so that when the two participants of a previous conversation begin speaking again via Hangouts their previous conversation is already there.

Google also rolled out a standalone Hangouts app -- previously this feature was included in the Google+ app -- which can be downloaded at: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.talk

Elsewhere on Google+ users of the social network are talking about the alleged "big announcement" expected from British-Irish boy band One Direction. The buzz surrounding this rather vague announcement began on Twitter following a series of messages from band member Niall Horan which suggested that he had something "exciting" to tell his fans. Though no further details of what this announcement might be are known it is expected that whatever it is that they are announcing will be announced Thursday.

The top 5 most talked about topics on Google+ on May 16 at 9:30 AM GMT are:
