Google+ trends: American elections dominate hot topics
Trending on Google+ in first place is "#Election2012" -- using this hashtag users of the social network are sharing news and images of Obama's re-election and Republican candidate Mitt Romney's concession speech.
In second place Wednesday, "#Amendment64" relates to the legalization of marijuana in Colorado. The amendment allows adults in Colorado to, among other things, possess up to an ounce of marijuana. The drug was also legalized in the state of Washington, which aims to set up a system of state-licensed growers, processors and even retail stores where it can be purchased.
American politics also account for the fourth-placed trending topic "Maine and Maryland" due to the two US states becoming the first to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote. The ruling marks a landmark moment in the United States, where citizens had previously voted against the legalization of gay marriage in every state that had put it to the polls -- the measure has been approved in six states and the Disctrict of Columbia through court or legislative decisions.
