Google Insights: North Americans search for news of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise

After it was announced on Friday, June 29, that Katie Holmes was divorcing Tom Cruise, her husband of five years, Google users took to the web in search of more related news. Data from Google Insights shows that the majority of searches for the term "Katie Holmes" originated in the United States, Canada and Ireland, with the most popular related search terms being "Katie Holmes split," "divorce Katie Holmes" and "Tom Cruise divorce."

The end of the relationship between the two actors also accounted for this week's fourth-ranked search term, "Tom Cruise."

Elsewhere in the world, notably the United Kingdom, Ireland and Serbia, Google users were searching for news from tennis tournament Wimbledon, which runs June 25 - July 8. Perhaps one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far was the defeat of world number 2 Rafael Nadal to 26-year-old Czech player Lukas Rosol, ranked 100 in the world.

Other popular searches over the past week included controversial Italian football player Mario Balotelli, whose team was defeated 4-0 by Spain in the final of Euro 2012 on Sunday night, and singer Adele, who recently announced that she is expecting her first child.

The search terms with the most significant growth worldwide in the last seven days, as measured by Google Insights and recorded July 2, were:
