Yahoo! reveals top searches of 2012

Yahoo!'s annual report on the top search topics over the year in the US reveals that this year's closely fought elections, which resulted in a second term for Barack Obama, were the most popular search topic.

Following on from the elections, Apple's iPhone 5, which was released on September 21, was the second most popular search topic in the US.

In terms of celebrities, TV personality Kim Kardashian ranked the highest in third place, probably thanks to her divorce from Kris Humphries and her relationship with Kanye West. American model Kate Upton came in fourth place after appearing on the 2012 cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge, appears in fifth place.

Search engine Bing also recently released its top US searches for people in 2012, placing Kim Kardashian in first place, followed by singers Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus.

Over on Yahoo! UK and Ireland, this year's London Olympics took the top spot in 2012's search topics, followed by the iPhone 5.
