Amazing 200mph convertibles
Let’s face it, cracking 200mph (approx. 322kmh) is one of the most extreme things you can ever do in a car. I’ve only done it once, in a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and it felt nerve-shreddingly intense.
And that was in the caged cocoon of a coupe. There’s been a spate of cars recently that can lift the roof on the 200mph barrier – quite literally, because at 200mph in these cars, you can have your head exposed to the sky.
Yes, you’re not short of choice when it comes to the gloriously improbable exercise of travelling at 200mph al fresco. We’ve found 18 cars you can do it in. And that doesn’t include fanciful claims, such as the one Panther made in 1977 for its six-wheeled Panther 6, claimed to do 200mph but which got nowhere near that in tests.
Rumours abound that various bog-standard convertibles, when liberated from the chain of their 155mph (approx. 249kmh) restrictors, will also reach 200mph. Examples include the BMW M6 Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Cabriolet and Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible, all of which should be capable of 200mph.
But for now – 18 cars that can definitely, probably, maybe do the double-ton…
