In 1997, while piloting the Thrust SSC in the Black Rock Desert in America, Wing Commander Andy Green officially became the fastest man on earth when he broke the sound barrier at 763mph. Thrust SSC gets its initial power from two Rolls-Royce Spey 202 turbo fan jet engines, a third, a Rolls-Royce Spey 205 turbo fan jet engine, delivers a final boost. Fast it may be, but as it burns four gallons of fuel every second, this engine arrangement isn't the most eco-friendly.
