Nowadays, tuners are installing 3.0-litre M3 engines in BMW 3 Series Compact models: the firm beat them to it, though, with this 321hp prototype from the 1990s. It even featured the trademark M quad exhausts at the rear. Again, the lack of a compelling business case sealed its fate.
