The Mercedes SL - the legendary sports car flagship of the German luxury car maker - turns 60 this year. We take a look at the glamorous roadster's past, present and future.

It was in February 1954 that Mercedes unveiled its first production-ready SL, the legendary 300SL ‘gullwing’ – a car that would kick off a long line of hi-tech, expensive and hugely desirable sports cars. Since that first SL, we’ve had another five generations of two-seater sports car, all of which have combined luxury, performance and style.

As Merc’s most highly developed mainstream two-seater roadster, the SL has never been a car for the masses, but with well over half a million produced so far, it’s clearly a car with mass appeal. So let’s raise a glass to an icon, and look forward to further generations of SL – how long until we see one with hydrogen fuel cell technology?
