We look at the fabulous creations of legendary design house Bertone, which folded this week
Bertone, one of the all-time great Italian design houses, coachbuilders and carmakers, has disappeared forever. After years of financial struggles, this once-great company has been consigned to the annals of history after a buyer wasn't found after it filed for the Italian equivalent of administration.
It was a tragic end to a company that has designed some of the most famous cars in history, including iconic Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Lamborghini road cars and some of the most remarkable concept cars of all time.
Founded in 1912 by Giovanni Bertone to build horse-drawn carriages, the company diversified into coachbuilt bodies on an array of chassis from companies such as Fiat, Itala and Lancia. Responsible over the years for employing design greats such as Giorgetto Giugiaro, Franco Scaglione and Marcello Gandini, Bertone employed 1,500 people by 1970, but just two years later Giovanni was dead and his son Nuccio was at the helm. He in turn died in 1997, and it was after his death that things started to falter. Now they have faltered for good…
