Marissa Mayer appointed CEO at Yahoo!
Struggling internet company Yahoo! pinched long-time Google executive Marissa Mayer and named her President and Chief Executive Officer of the company. Bloggers spent the week debating whether or not Mayer was a good fit for Yahoo!. Hours after the news broke Fortune revealed that Mayer was pregnant. Mayer confirmed the news via Twitter, announcing “Another piece of good news today - @zackbogue and I are expecting a new baby boy!”

Microsoft Office 2013 consumer preview released
Microsoft touted the social, connected and tactile features of the next version of its desktop publishing software, Microsoft Office 2013, and announced that a “consumer preview” version of the software was available as a free download. The new Office suite is designed to work on desktop PCs as well as on tablets running the company's Windows 8 operating system. It has been enhanced with social and cloud features and supports touch stylus, mouse and keyboard input.

First images of iPad prototype
NetworkWorld uncovered the “earliest known photos of an Apple iPad prototype” in Apple/Samsung court filings. The “035 tablet” mockup, which “Apple had in the works for years before they introduced the iPad,” resembles Apple’s old iBook laptops and is much thicker than the consumer released tablet. BuzzFeed discovered additional color photos of O35 tablet juxtaposed next to the iPad 2 which shows huge differences in the size of the two devices. The prototype is thought to have been produced sometime between 2002 and 2004.

Q2 earnings from Microsoft, Google
Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, eBay and Intel posted their Q2 2012 earnings. Bloggers trawled through the figures and facts and reported that “Microsoft just lost money for the first time ever,” “ Google Internet business defies econ worries, ad clicks surge” and “Intel Results Beat the Street as It Cuts Full Year Outlook.”

YouTube launches automatic face blurring tool
YouTube became one of the first video sharing sites in the world to enable people to blur out faces in videos they upload. Google is rolling out the new tool as increasing numbers of citizen journalists capture and upload eyewitness footage of breaking news events or humanitarian rights violations. Google hopes the tool will enable people to share their stories and have their voice heard in situations where, without visual anonymity, they might otherwise be afraid to speak out.
