It's still the smartphone and tablet gaming sensation and is a particular bargain on Android tablets where the ad-supported versions are all free. But the Birds are just the tip of the gaming iceberg. There are superb titles like Contre Jour HD , where you must nudge the ground to make a blob-like hero roll, bounce and spring into the light. It looks gorgeous and has hypnotic music.

Along similar lines is Cut the Rope (iPad, Android, £1.49/62p) where you must do as the title suggests to feed a dear green monster. Add in timing-crucial games like Whale Trail (iPad, 69p) or the classic Tetris (iPad, Android, 69p/£1.27) and there's enough gaming variety to keep you busy for a long time to come.
