McLaren Launches New Stunning 12C Spider
The luxury convertible promises spectacular driving performance with remarkable usability
Last June, McLaren delighted fans in Singapore with the launch of the supercar 12C, marking the luxury automobile’s focus on the development and production of its own road cars since the iconic F1 nearly twenty years ago. Then coinciding with the Singapore Formula 1TM race, there was more reason for cheer when McLaren Singapore unveiled the Singapore edition 12C, the announcement of which blazed across global digital automotive news channels, forums and blog sites.
This December, the spotlight now turns to the stunning new 12C Spider, the second model fully developed by McLaren Automotive, and a luxury convertible that promises a unique combination of spectacular performance with remarkable usability; at heart, the 12C Spider runs with the essence of a race car, yet it transforms easily into a high performance roadster with just the flick of a switch.
The stunning new 12C Spider is a luxury convertible that promises a unique combination of spectacular performance with remarkable usability.
“12C Spider owners will love the opportunity to lower the roof and hear the unhindered howl of a V8 twin turbo engine at full throttle,”enthuses Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automative Managing Director. “It undoubtedly enhances an already euphoric 12C driving experience.”
On the outside, the 12C Spider is a beauty worthy of its supercar stature. Buyers can choose from 17 high quality paint finishes (we’re especially partial to the classic carbon black and sleek dark blue) for their desired look. With a click of the switch inside the cabin, the retractable hard top of the 12C Spider is raised in under 17 seconds, allowing the driver to revel in the exhilarating roar of the 12C Spider’s V8 twin turbo engine. Unlike many other convertible models, the roof of the 12C Spider can be operated even when the car is in motion, up to 30kph. Inside, an exclusive new interior trim, available in customisable combinations of high quality semi-aniline perforated leather and Alcantara, has been developed for the new model.
At the core of the 12C Spider, a bespoke 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo engine is what gives it its incredible horsepower of 625PS, while the 7 Speed SSG dual-clutch transmission provides lightning-fast gear changes. Other vehicle dynamics technology such as the Brake Steer, ProActive Chassis Control and the unique McLaren Airbrake all combine to allow for sublime comfort in driving, whilst delivering race car performance and handling at the same time. Safety is, of course, still of the utmost importance; a passive Roll Over Protection System maximises occupant safety.
What’s most impressive however, is that even with all the racing technology incorporated into the car’s build, the 12C Spider, at 1,474kg, is a mere 40kg heavier than the coupé, and much of the weight is due to its retractable hard top.
