US postage stamps honor legendary Hollywood directors

Marilyn Monroe strums a ukulele from 1959's Some Like It Hot on a new Billy Wilder stamp and Humphrey Bogart holds a Maltese Falcon statue from the 1941 film adaptation of the novel on the stamp commemorating director John Huston.

As part of the "Great Film Directors" set, the US Postal Service released four first-class stamps May 24 paying tribute to Classic Hollywood directors John Ford, Frank Capra, Billy Wilder and John Huston.

Iconic scenes from the Oscar winning directors' films are incorporated with portraits of the filmmakers on each stamp created by artists Derry Noyes and Gary Kelley.

The Frank Capra stamp is inspired by his 1934 comedy It Happened One Night, starring Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable, though he may be best-known for the still popular holiday film It's a Wonderful Life.

John Wayne is featured in 1956's The Searchers on the stamp for John Ford, the director who won Oscars for The Grapes of Wrath and The Quiet Man.

The postal service commemorates Hollywood stars regularly on stamps, having honored Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and more. Classic films like The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind have gotten stamps as has British director Alfred Hitchcock.

Music greats are also saluted and stamps will debut on June 12 for jazz trumpeter Miles Davis and France's renowned singer Edith Piaf in a joint effort with France's La Poste.
