The company's advertising was shared on Facebook, Twitter and across the blogosphere some 5.89 million times between January 1 and November 22, almost 500,000 times more than its closest competitor, Nike, whose videos were shared some 5.47 million times over the same period.

The research, compiled by Unruly to measure the increasing significance that social media plays in brand building and brand recognition, also saw a list of newcomers to its top 10 chart for this year. TNT Benelux (third place), Coca-Cola (sixth), Abercrombie & Fitch (seventh), Samsung (eighth) and P&G (ninth) all moved into the top 10, clocking up a combined 35 million shares, while Budweiser, Evian, T-Mobile and Kia all exited the top 10.

Unruly co-founder Sarah Wood said: "The Unruly 2012 Social Video Share Index is the definitive chart for measuring a commercial brand's social video success as it's based purely on sharing activity rather than views and subjective criteria. This is the content that people are choosing to share. Savvy brands are no longer creating content to merely watch their YouTube view counter tick up, they're measuring who's sharing the content, what they're saying, and how it's impacting brand metrics."
