Food app provides menu ideas with a spin and a shake

The largest user-generated online recipe site has released an updated app that allows users to keep a virtual pantry in their smartphone, get recipe ideas based on what they have at home, and emerge from a menu rut with a few shakes of their phone.

Similar in concept to Gojee which provides recipe ideas based on the contents of your fridge and food cravings, Dinner Spinner from Allrecipes.com goes one step further and allows users to scan grocery store items into their phone to create a virtual pantry so that shoppers know what they need and what they already have at home.

At the grocery store, a scan of the product or food ingredient will also produce dozens of recipe ideas.

Users can look up recipes based on dish, cooking time and ingredient. Dishes include gluten-free and vegetarian recipe ideas.

Shaking the phone will also yield surprise recipe ideas to help families and home cooks get out of a food rut.
In addition to Gojee, Epicurious.com also offers a food app that allows users to create interactive shopping lists and sync to their online Recipe Box from the site.

Dinner Spinner is free and is available on iOS and Android.
