Star Wars' iconic Death Star trench run recreated for virtual reality headset

A detailed cockpit view, with an R2 unit faithfully installed to the aft, and architecture that references the Death Star's topography provide a familiar setting for would-be X-Wing pilots.

Though lacking a wide variety of enemies at this early point in development, Imperial turrets fire off lasers, obstructive structural beams force players to duck and weave, and any errant souls that dare peer above the trench can kiss their spaceship goodbye.

As a proof of concept, it shows what the Oculus Rift can do; as a video game it joins numerous other Star Wars video games, from "Star Wars: X-Wing" right up to "Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy," in letting players act out one of George Lucas's defining cinematic moments.
