Paul McCartney providing music for 'Halo' creator's next game
"I'm really excited to be working on writing music with Bungie, the studio that made Halo," he said via Twitter on July 7.
Having left the Halo franchise in the hands of Microsoft, Bungie is developing the working title Destiny for late 2013 as the first in a planned four-game series. Like Halo, it will be a futuristic, first-person shooter with a science-fiction setting.
Destiny is also expected to adopt conventions from the Massively Multiplayer Online game genre -- a fitting combination, as publisher Activision already controls MMO World of Warcraft and blockbuster shooter franchise Call of Duty.
Bungie's award winning in-house composer Martin O'Donnell has overseen soundtrack creation for the five previous Halo games; Chic guitarist and music producer Nile Rodgers now carries the soundtracks on his record label Sumthing Distribution.
