And, according to data from analysts GfK Chart Track, 60% of buyers plumped for the Premium Bundle, which includes a 32GB console, plus accessories and a copy of the game Nintendo Land. Another 30% went for the Zombi Bundle, which ships with a pro controller, meaning that only 10% of early adopters have chosen the entry-level package that doesn't include any software.

In fact, games industry trade magazine MCV notes that over the first 48 hours, two games have been sold for every console -- good news for Nintendo, which said that unlike its earlier hardware devices, the Wii U is the first product that requires a supporting game sale in order to be profitable.

However, this brisk performance hasn't dented the UK gaming charts, as a Nintendo title is yet to break into the top 10.

With stocks in the UK now effectively sold out, the price of Wii U consoles on sites such as eBay and Amazon has increased significantly since the weekend.
