Legendary role playing game 'Final Fantasy VII' gets closer to official PC download

Released in 1997 on PlayStation, it initiated a shift away from 2D graphics and was the first in the series to debut on Sony's home console.

A further seven entries to the main series followed; numbers XI and XIV were online only, while spin-offs or sequels such as Dissidia Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy Tactics, XII-2 and July's Nintendo 3DS effort Theatrhythm Final Fantasy were considered as good as if not better than some of the core offerings.

As concessions to the modern age, the upcoming Final Fantasy VII will incorporate 36 in-game achievements to unlock, a character booster to help players ease their way through tricky sections, and cloud saving -- a method of backing up game progress online, and one which shares its name with Final Fantasy VII's main character, Cloud Strife.

No firm date, but publisher Square Enix says that FFVII will be re-released as a download "soon."
