'Battlefield Heroes' celebrates birthday with tricycle races
Accompanying the launch of a new map called Fortress Frenzy, turning three years old means birthday gifts for players, including T-shirts for their in-game characters, two keys to open random treasure chests, and three days' use of a tricycle.
Battlefield Heroes, which boasts 11 million registered users, is one of two free Battlefield experiences, along with the more serious portrayal of Battlefield Play4Free.
The no-fee game is supported by a Battlefield Heroes store from which players can customize their in-game appearance or purchase space for extra characters.
The new Treasure Chests appear by chance upon successful defeat of an enemy, contain a random item, but stay locked unless players have a treasure chest key, which can be bought from the Heroes store.
The system resembles the treasure chest mechanic of ZT Online, a game that became well-known precisely because of its expert implementation of a variable reward ratio, which saw players paying up for the chance to win in-game items.
