'Black Ops 2' tops US sales in 2012

Party game "Just Dance 4" also made the 2012 top five along with "Madden NFL 13," "Halo 4", and "Assassin's Creed 3."

Of the year's ten best sellers, only "Lego Batman 2" and 2011's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" were released outside of a busy end-of-year period.

Additionally, "Halo 4," exclusive to the Xbox 360, was the only member of 2012's top ten to sell on only one platform, while all the rest were available on multiple formats.

Nintendo of America responded by announcing that its newest home console, the Wii U, had sold nearly 890,000 units between a November 18 debut and the year's close, while "New Super Mario Bros. U" made its way into the hands of 580,000 Wii U owners -- but the handheld 3DS was Nintendo's strongest performer for December on 1.25m sales.

And just as Nintendo is mindful of new Xbox and PlayStation console announcements in 2013, Microsoft presented its Xbox 360 as the US's best-selling console in December (1.4m), surely with one eye on an IDC report that now places the PlayStation 3 on 77m to the 360's 76m global lifetime sales.
