Android-powered console project Ouya raises $8.6m in public fundraiser

The first run of these little gaming cubes is expected to be sent out in December 2012, with the bulk distributed in March 2013.

Following the conclusion of its stint on fundraising site Kickstarter, the Ouya became the portal's second most successful project, sliding in behind the versatile Pebble wristwatch display ($10.2m at $115 for the basic model) and ahead of another video game project, Double Fine Adventure ($3.3m at a minimum $15 for the game).

Having closed on Kickstarter, the Ouya's official website commenced pre-orders at $109 for US orders and $119 for internationals.

The console will come out after the Nintendo Wii U, still to be given a definitive date and price, as well as another Kickstarter project, the virtual reality headset Oculus Rift, which currently stands at $1.5m raised with 21 days to go with standard prototype kits due for distribution in December 2012.

Microsoft and Sony, which produces the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, respectively, are widely expected to announce if not launch new entertainment consoles in 2013.
